The crown is the part of the tooth that protrudes from the gum. This area is naturally covered by tooth enamel. When the tooth has a large cavity with not enough tooth structure, when it is fractured, placing a crown may be the best option.
At the Dental Clinic IED, we use the CEREC technology which offers our patients the design, manufacture and custom installation of a ceramic crown. The optical impression (CAD-CAM) is the technology that allows the dentist to manufacture the crown, in just minutes, on site. In some cases, we also use the service of a highly specialized dental laboratory.
As per the ‘Ordre des dentistes du Québec’, a crown is highly recommended for teeth that have been subjected to a root canal or to prevent additional damage.
Other use of a crown:
- Repair a broken tooth;
- Cover teeth that have undergone large fillings;
- Correct the position, shape or colour of a tooth;
- Correct the occlusion e.g. the spacing between the teeth.
